EMERSON UNSTITCHED

Emerson Independent Video/em mag, April 2011

executive producers: Matt Caruso, Justin Reis, Maggie Schneider

lighting designer: Kirk J. Miller

Emerson Unstitched was Emerson College's first-ever live fashion competition reality show. Over the course of a month, three student fashion designers created their own lines (each corresponding to a recent em mag theme) and presented them to three student judges in a final live fashion show. The entire creative process was followed by EIV's cameras up to the day of the runway show. The 24' runway was made up of lucite and plexiglass (generously provided by Boston's United Staging and Rigging). The end of the runway consisted of an 8' tall frame with a custom logo stitched entirely of diffusion. Although the scenery was an important overall element, it needed to be simple and understated, not exciting or flashy. The runway and backdrop needed to serve as a backdrop for the clothes and a playground for the various lighting looks without upstaging either of these other design elements. That being said, the space needed to have style and visual interest while simultaneously managing to fade into the background.
